Many homeowners are eager for their properties to have easy-care flooring. In addition to preferring convenience, they also want flooring that looks great. As a builder or a contractor, you need to be able to recommend a flooring material that checks both boxes. Vinyl plank flooring could be exactly what you need. Once you learn how to take care of vinyl plank flooring, you may be ready to recommend this versatile material to your clients.

Step 1: Clean up Spills Immediately

Vinyl plank flooring is quite sturdy, but the key is not to let it get too wet. Cleaning splashes and spills promptly is important. When a drink spills on the floor, use a soft cloth to wipe it up right away. Quickly responding to spills can also help prevent stains. Acidic liquids, such as vinegar, are especially likely to stain the material. To help guard against water damage, it can be a good idea to lay rugs near doors and sinks.

Step 2: Sweep Debris Regularly

Vinyl plank flooring from The Wholesale Cabinet Supply Company is comprised of multiple layers. The outer layers are sturdy but can still be scratched by abrasive debris. Sweeping up dust and dirt daily can reduce the likelihood of such damage. Choose a gentle tool for sweeping, such as a broom with soft, flexible bristles. Avoid stiff-bristled brooms and vacuums with brush attachments.

Make sure to reach the broom underneath your gray cabinetsStonecreeck cabinets or farmhouse table. Get into the corners of the room, too. A vacuum with a hose attachment can be useful for getting the crumbs out of nooks and crannies.

Step 3: Use a Damp Mop

Once weekly or biweekly, mop the floor. Consider using a microfiber mop, which will be soft and gentle on your floors. The thing to remember when mopping is that less water is better. You may not want to use a traditional mop-and-bucket approach to this job. Rather, spritzing the mop with a spray bottle of cleaning solution can be an effective method. If you do dip your mop in a bucket, be sure to wring it out thoroughly.

For your cleaning solution, mix a small amount of gentle dish soap with water. You can also use commercial solutions that specify that they're suitable for vinyl floors. Avoid bleach, ammonia, and other harsh cleaners.

Step 4: Spot-Clean Stains

At times, a stain may pop up that the mop alone can't handle. Those spots require targeted attention. A cleaning mixture made from common household ingredients often does the trick.

One idea is to add dish soap or laundry detergent to plain water. Use a light-colored rag or sponge to slowly and gently rub the solution into the spot. Take your time, and don't push too hard or saturate the flooring.

A paste made of baking soda and water may help with more stubborn stains. Baking soda is somewhat abrasive, though, so be careful about how hard you press. Some stains, such as those left by an ink pen, may respond well to rubbing alcohol or acetone. Always spot-test cleaning solutions in a hidden area before using them in the middle of the room.

Step 5: Address Scuffs and Scratches

Scuffs left by furniture and shoes are usually easy to rub out. A tennis ball works remarkably well for this job. A dry sponge will do the trick, too. If the flooring gets a light scratch, you may be able to buff it out with a soft rag or a pencil eraser. Deeper scratches may require light buffing with sandpaper, but be sure to choose a very fine grit and apply light pressure.
